Wirtgen

High-quality and innovative road machines from WIRTGEN

The Wirtgen company was founded in the early 1960s in Windhagen in North Rhine-Westphalia. Through the acquisition of Hamm, Vögele and other mechanical engineering companies, it later developed into the WIRTGEN GROUP, which was founded in 1996 and is now part of the global company John Deer & Company. At the end of its independent existence, the turnover of the mechanical engineering company, which most recently employed around 9,000 people, was three billion euros.

The company's founder, Reinhard Wirtgen, began operating a transport company as a one-man operation back in 1961. The skilful entrepreneur and engineer soon developed his own concrete crusher for road construction in his small workshop. He gradually expanded his fleet of vehicles and machinery to include special vehicles and milling machines. The company grew rapidly and in a short time Wirtgen was able to establish his method throughout Germany with around a hundred large machines and more than 150 employees. By the end of the 1970s, Wirtgen had once again significantly increased its profitability by developing hot milling as a useful supplement to cold milling.

Wirtgen gradually expanded its product range for four different fields of application. The first subsidiaries were established abroad. From 1981 onwards, the company opened up opencast mines with so-called surface miners and was able to cut hard rock. In 1987, cold recycling was added as an innovative and economical method for rehabilitation in road construction. From 1989 onwards, the same-form paver division was integrated into the company, which enabled the paving of monolithic profiles and concrete roads. In 1997 Reinhard Wirtgen handed over the management of the WIRTGEN GROUP to Jürgen and Stefan Wirtgen.

The WIRTGEN GROUP was joined at the end of the 1990s by the road paver manufacturer Vögele and the roller manufacturer Hamm. The WIRTGEN GROUP's efficient and state-of-the-art cold milling machines, surface miners, slipform pavers, hot recyclers, cold recyclers and soil stabilisers have long since been marketed via a worldwide network of companies, and large sums have again been invested in the main plant in Germany. In 2006, a new business segment was opened up with Mineral and Road Technologies. With the integration of Kleemann GmbH, a producer of mobile and stationary processing plants, the company was expanded by another business field.

In 2014, the WIRTGEN GROUP was joined by the traditional and renowned Benninghoven GmbH & Co. KG, a manufacturer of asphalt mixing plants. Finally, in 2017, John Deere took over the WIRTGEN GROUP for 4.4 billion dollars.
